“Dangerous objects” are another type of weapon in Victoria and include all legal items such as a kitchen knife that becomes dangerous when used as a weapon. These may be, for example, golf clubs or hammers. It is illegal to wear these items in public with the intention of using them as a weapon. This carries sentences of up to 6 months in prison (12 months in prison if transported to or near an authorized site where alcohol is sold). You may lawfully wear and use these items for the intended legal purposes (for legal excuses). It is illegal to possess or use these items for self-defence. It is illegal to possess a prohibited weapon for self-defence under section 11 of the Weapons Act 1998. One of the exceptions to this is bulletproof vests, which can legally be used for self-defence, although they are considered a prohibited weapon in New South Wales. In California, the following are illegal: (1) Any knife with a blade of 2″ or more that can be opened with a button or handle; (2) the concealed possession of a “dirk” or a “dagger”, that is, a stabbing device with a fixed blade, regardless of the length of the blade; (3) the possession or sale of disguised blades. Mowing with scythes is a skill that can greatly facilitate forage mowing and making hay on a small scale. For the operation and maintenance of fakes, as described in this brochure, skills are required. Once properly trained, mowing the scythe can be a satisfying and cost-effective experience.

It is clear that if you make ten thousand cuts to mow one hectare, there is a big difference in the effort that is required.

Despite the interest in mowing fakes, it is difficult to find knowledgeable people who can help potential users in the selection, maintenance and operation of fakes. Knowledge of fakes is fundamentally lacking in developing countries, and even among farmers like the Amish in the United States, knowledge of fakes largely disappeared when they switched to the use of sickle mowers on horseback. Fortunately, a small community of enthusiasts provides resources for fakes.
