These organizations made an extraordinary contribution to Law Day. In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared May 1 as Law Day in the United States. The first day of May has since been celebrated in parts of the world such as May Day or International Workers` Day: a day to commemorate workers` struggles for better wages and working conditions, including the eight-hour movement. “You know, I`m not really sure,” said John Reitz, a law professor at the University of Iowa and an expert in administrative law, the area of law that involves government administration. It turned out, he said, that the consequences of a leap day are not the kind of thing that governments or the law really spend a lot of time thinking about. The American Bar Association refers to a topic to highlight an important topic related to the law or legal system. The theme for 2014 was American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Counts. The theme reflects the importance of the right to vote, the accessibility of ballot boxes and voter participation.

The ABA is making resources available on its Law Day website www.lawday.org and is hosting several national Law Day programs in Washington, D.C. on April 30 and May 1. This year, the Department of Access to Justice invited students from New York State to participate in an art competition to celebrate Law Day. In recent years, tensions in our democratic system have revealed deep divisions in American society. These divisions are exacerbated by rudeness in public discourse and insufficient understanding of the Constitution and the workings of the U.S. government. Together, however, we can work together to overcome our differences, resolve our differences, and preserve our democracy and republic. To this end, we call on members of the legal profession to take the lead in promoting civic education, comity and cooperation – the cornerstones of our democracy. But on February 5, 1958, President Eisenhower recognized the first Law Day by announcing that from now on May 1 of each year would be Law Day in the United States.

He explained: “In a very real sense, the world no longer has a choice between force and law. If civilization wants to survive, it must choose the rule of law. [5] Today, many local bar and legal education associations, such as the Florida Law Related Education Association and the New York State Bar Association, use Law Day as a legal education tool, especially for students. These resources celebrate the law and, in dramatic re-enactments, bring to life the role of students, the courts and the Constitution in times of change. Previous participants in Personal Law Day events include Safe Horizons, Rent Stabilization Association, Department of the Aging, New York City Bar Association – Legal Referral Service, New York State Court Officers Association, and Association of Small Claims Arbitrators. The Office of Legal Initiatives of the Ministry of Access to Justice sponsors Law Day events to provide social services and legal information to the public. These annual events are celebrated throughout the state.
