The course is an effective adult education solution that leverages online training while integrating the content and methods of a successful on-site curriculum designed to teach participants how to properly manage the Substance Abuse Severity Index (ASI). This one-day training is based on the required 2-day training on ASAM criteria. The training provides a brief overview and then moves on to a more specific application, with a focus on using the criteria to determine admission, subsequent residency, and exit. Using case studies, participants practice applying risk ratings, dimensional eligibility criteria, designing the initial framework for a service plan, and then using criteria for continued stay, transfer and leave. Training will also focus on clinical documentation to support the use and application of the criteria. Therefore, ODMHSAS has partnered with Treatment Basics to provide ASI training to providers to gain the knowledge, skills and support materials needed to properly administer ASI in a clinical setting. The ASI is a structured clinical interview with clinical, program evaluation and research applications. It was used to assess a client`s treatment needs.

In addition, the tool has proven beneficial in standardizing the evaluation process and is used for treatment planning, outcome studies and overall program evaluation. The objective of the training is to develop and/or improve the skills of interviewers in order to properly manage and use the ASI. This training is a further development of a training model for trainers. Training goes beyond the short-sighted and often ineffective belief that more coaches and training are making changes. Although training and local know-how are an important part of implementation, it is usually the only piece and becomes ineffective as a model of implementation and sustainability. The field often teaches and expects change without teaching and advising on what to install, how to measure it, how to build the implementation team, and what needs to be removed to make room for the new model. We overlook the fact that all programs are perfectly designed to do exactly what they do; We need to think more about the installation. We basically teach people how to play baseball and never wonder if they have the equipment and a field to play on when they leave training The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) has approved this activity for up to 8 LLSA credits for the requirements of Part II of the MOC ABPM. The success of this activity can be used to meet the requirements of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) for Tmoc as credits for the requirements of Part II of the ABAM LLSA. The scope of considerations for substance use disorder services is broad, and there are important considerations when working with specific populations, such as youth. Designed for participants who already have an understanding of the fundamental aspects of ASAM* criteria. The aim of this training is to explore and discuss the youth-specific aspects of the ASAM criteria and to provide learners with practical guidance through the use of lectures, real clinical vignettes and case studies.

Full-day ASAM training available: Full-day ASAM training provides a high-level overview of ASAM as well as instructions on how to properly apply ASAM criteria for proper patient placement. It will also discuss the use of ASAM criteria to determine the appropriate treatment of patients based on their level of care. The ASAM training series will focus on using ASAM criteria as a tool for initial client placement and ongoing services at a specific level of support. This training will also address the role of ASAM in medical necessity and treatment planning. This training focuses on processes and models to assess the terrain, equipment and what needs to change to support the new model. Implementers are “foot soldiers” in the process of implementing the ASAM criteria because of their clinical knowledge and leadership in their communities and programs. Implementers develop an awareness of thoughtful planning, communication and appropriate system change strategies to foster implementation and sustainability, as well as coaching and monitoring others on the criteria. All participants will receive a training journal and the support tool from the leader in the implementation of asam criteria as part of the training.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which consists of participating in the activity with individual participant ratings and participant feedback, allows the participant to earn a maximum of 8 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.
