How many shirts, blazers/jackets and pants should I have for my position as a summer associate at NYC Big Law? I wore a suit and tie on the first day and I`m glad I did it because everyone else did it too. We were all slightly ribbed throughout the day because we dressed so cleverly, and the rest of the summer I only wore suit pants and a button-down shirt, no tie or jacket as that was what all the lawyers wore, and I kept a suit in my office closet in case I accompanied someone to court. Agree with the others, this is firmly specific. But in general, you can`t go wrong with overdressing (for us ladies, I`m wrong about the side of a cute dress, not too short (how meets the top of the kneecap and not higher) and a casual blazer if you need it – otherwise, keep it on the back of your door, you never know). After a few weeks, you`ll know what`s cool, but you`ll still be wrong about the conservative at first. I was happy with Charles Tyrwhitt`s shirts; You can get them for $29 a piece and they are of better quality and come in more options than the shirts I`ve seen for 2x. When it comes to styles, I would recommend a collar to spread or half spread out in white and light blue before you get too creative. My company relaxed its dress code – they were also quite relaxed before (people rarely wore suits and ties). During my summer before Covid, I was talking about chinos or dark pants, a button up, then a vest or jacket. Now, as a partner in the first year, I dress even more casually. Usually, any pants, and a button up or a polo shirt, then nice shoes (Chelsea Boots, Sperry`s, Jordans, Nikes), but no shoes.

This, of course, depends on the location, but it also seems to be the case for most of my friends in Businesses in the Bay Area/California area. I`m fat too. I entered my summer with two suits and probably about 8-10 shirts and maybe 3 dress pants. If cost is an issue, you don`t have to opt for expensive shirts. Think specifically of a company like DPW/STB/PW. Really casual. Some people wear jeans. Everyone wears sneakers. I usually wear decent pants (but not suit pants), a blouse or a nicer shirt, and nice sneakers or flat shoes. The managing partner is exclusively Allbirds. When someone goes to court, we know what they are wearing because of what they are wearing.

Hi all, I`m a 2L who is starting to think about what I`m going to wear for my 2L great summer partner in law (I procrastinate rn, don`t judge me). Any tips for affordable but professional office clothing? I`m 25 years old and I`m going to an SD company, so I don`t want to look stuffy/old, but I also don`t want to look too young and fashionable. It`s a top-tier company, so they dress professionally and I don`t want to look out of place.
