The Ask A Law Librarian chat service is available to all our clients, but is designed to meet the legal research needs of UM students, staff and faculty. William W. Cook (`80, `82l) of New York donated funds for the Legal Research Building as well as the other three buildings (the Lawyers Club, John P. Cook Dormitory and Hutchins Hall) that make up the Law Quadangle. Mr. Cook, Dean Bates of Law School, and President Hutchins formulated the plans for the quadrangle, and York and Sawyer were chosen as architects for the project. Access to the Legal Research Building is restricted to members of the Michigan legal community, who start at home at 8 p.m. every weekday and at home throughout the day on Saturday. Here are guides to help you find resources and learn about research in different areas, in specific jurisdictions, for specific courses in law schools, or to prepare for specific events (such as exams and CLBs). The existing law school facilities were expanded in 2012 with a new four-story university building, Jeffries Hall, in the college`s modified Gothic style, as well as a beautiful glass-roofed meeting place for the law school community, Aikens Commons.
The result, both physically and metaphorically, enhances our true community of life and learning. The Legal Research Building was completed in 1931. It seats 500 readers in the main study room, includes tiles in magazines, and has about 80 studies for faculty members, guest lawyers and judges, and other researchers. It is probably the largest building in the world dedicated exclusively to a legal library. Over time, the building will age and look even more like Hutchins Hall. It houses classrooms, faculty offices, administrative offices and workspaces for many of our clinics. The beauty and functionality of the law school is a factor in student satisfaction and programmatic success. The location of residential and university buildings in the quad encourages the integration of activities for students and faculty. The striking Gothic-style buildings that make up the William W. Cook Law Quadrangle include the Lawyers Club, with accommodation for 227 students; the Legal Research Building, which houses the magnificent reading room and faculty offices; a modern underground library, the Allan F. and the Alene Smith Library, considered an architectural feat and one of the best law libraries in the world; and Hutchins Hall with classrooms, seminar rooms, and faculty and administrative offices.
