Our students provide regular support and assistance as part of Newham`s renewal program under the supervision of immigration expert Sylwia Szymczyk. They take instructions, conduct legal research, translate where they can, and help with client meetings in any way they need. Our goal is to advise clients on their legal situation and the options available to them to resolve their legal issues. As a consulting service, we do not represent clients` cases in court or conduct legal disputes. However, we act as a referral agency for other organizations that can handle customer cases free of charge. The Legal Advice Centre may provide legal advice to clients in writing and, resources permitting, we may work with third parties on behalf of our clients. Our services are free of charge. We prefer cases that are not eligible for legal aid or where clients cannot afford to pay for a lawyer. We can also take on cases if we feel there is no other support from other agencies. The Legal Advice Centre organizes a weekly intake session only during the semester period.
All applications are reviewed individually to ensure they meet the criteria of the Legal Advice Centre. If your case is urgent and you need immediate legal advice, you should contact a lawyer or other agencies that are able to provide emergency advice and/or assistance. We are pleased to consider applications from individual lawyers, law firms, chambers or legal advice organisations to become partners of the Legal Advice Centre at the University of East London. 1 Salway Pl, London E15 1NF Please call us on +44 (0) 7871 734 380 or email legaladvicecentre@uel.ac.uk We are only open during the semester period. What happens during the interview? The first step is an interview. Clients do not receive legal advice at this time. Clients are interviewed by two student advisors who also describe our policies and customer support information. All communications are kept strictly confidential and customer files are stored securely in accordance with confidentiality requirements. As part of our commitment to providing free legal information to the local community, our student volunteers at the Legal Advice Centre design information brochures on current issues for the benefit of our clients. The purpose of these brochures is to provide a simplified overview of the law. They do not constitute legal advice.
